My iPod

So....my iPod probably has some of the most embarrassing music on it in the class. I should start off by saying that I like popular music. Ever since I started college, most of my friends have made fun of my musical taste. It's not to say that I don't have any, but I choose to have poor taste by most music major's standards. I think it boils down to my idea that the music I listen to away from school should be fun and to some extent.....mindless. I don't mind catchy drum beats and I-IV-V-I progressions. It's fun to me. I spend so much of my time working on, studying, understanding, and listening to "Serious" music that I don't care to listen to it when I am walking to get coffee or cleaning my apartment. I like to sing along and dance and be silly from time to time. It's a good thing not to take yourself too seriously. So now that I am done defending my musical taste, here is a list of music that is currently on my iPod.

I should start with the singer/songwriters because they are my favorite.

Jason Mraz: If you get past what's on the radio and look for the live and unproduced records, you can find a lot of interesting songs and lyrics. He is one of my favorite performers and I have every album, bootleg disc, and have seen him in concert 3 times now. I like his music because the words are thought out and interesting and like poetry. There is also a sense of humor in his music that I appreciate.

The Beatles: This is the first band that I can really remember listening to as a child. My parents were big fans and I remember knowing all of the words, and even making up the words when I couldn't understand them because I was so young. I always come back to them and the music has never become dull to me after all of these years.

Carol King: My mom always sang her songs around the house, so the "Tapestry" album holds a special place in my heart.

David Gray: I like his lyrics and his British accent.

Jack Johnson: I have every album and for the most part like how calm and soothing his music is.

Ben Harper: His songs are eclectic and different and I only caught on to his music by accident.

Here are the rest that I like from this category.
Adelle
Duffy
Alicia Keys
A Fine Frenzy
Fionna Apple
John Mayer
Matt Costa
Bare Naked Ladies
Oasis
Bush

I also like pop music and I won't try to justify why I like it except that the music is fun to dance to or catchy to sing, and I am not embarrassed to admit that I like it.

Britney Spears
Madonna
Justin Timberlake
Beyonce
Eve
Ludacris
Jay-Z
Kelly Rowland
Pussy Cat Dolls
Rhianna
Pink
Mariah Carey
Lady Gaga
Jennifer Hudson
Fergie

I also have a large amount of Classical Repertoire. I love Brahms, so I have all of the symphonic works and the clarinet pieces. I have a recording of almost every piece of standard clarinet literature to use as references for my own playing. I have all of the big Stavinsky Pieces, and Strauss, and Beethoven, Kodaly, Penderecki, Mendehllsohn, etc. I love this music. I wouldn't be in the profession I am in if I didn't have a great amount of love and respect for it. It has become one of the biggest parts of my life aside from friends and family. I should always buy more and listen to more. There simply isn't enough time in the day to get to all of the music I would like to hear.

Hope I didn't ramble.

  1. Oh, Dennis,
    A wonderful post!
I would love to send a longer response than is possible now, but I would say in sheer number, the leading figure on my iPod is Tom Waits, with Greg Brown a close second (unless you count the individual variations from the Goldberg Variations and the movements of the suites, then JSB would have it).
I am reminded of a girl who was in the Governors' Scholars program (for high school students) I taught in 25 years ago. When I asked about the kinds of music the class liked. This girl was embarrassed to admit that she loved country music, but she could not help it, since that was the music she heard growing up at home. Perhaps our musical tastes (like our emotions) are set pretty early on. although I didn't discover classical music until about age 17, at which time it obliterated all other musics (including the Beetles, the Stones, etc. to which all my peers were listening to in the late 60s) until I heard Tom Waits on Saturday Night Live and I woke up to a few singers (age 30 or so), Van Morrison (age 45)... I'm a slow learning. But it remains an interested question about taste, familiarity, comfort zones, and learning. The reason I am interested in peoples' iPods (really listening preferences) is because I want to expand mine and learn more about the people I know through the music they like. Getting to know their music may be another way of knowing more about them (and about us)
Thanks. More of you... What do you listen to. You can't be wrong here.
    De gustibus non est disputandum.

  2. Dennis - Popular music is called popular music for a reason. It's usually written to be catchy and engaging and to easily stick in one's ear. So if you like it, it just means the producers and artists have done their job well. In particular, after our John Cage experience today, I doubt anyone will mock you for your tastes!

  3. Popular... sometimes I wonder if people during the time of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven felt embaressed for liking "popular music." Can you imagine one of them saying "my iPod probably has some of the most embarrassing music on it in the class. I listen to Symphony 40, Sonata Appassionata..." Well, I don't inted to compare "old times" popular with nowadays, not diminishing not elevating, I just want to think that art is supposed to be art, doesn't matter the venue.
    Enough said, here it goes.
